Protein-Packed Mushroom Meals for 2025

While protein may be trending on consumers’ plates, mushrooms are what bring excitement and flavor to these protein-centric meals.

Powering up with protein is more popular than ever, but eating a high-protein diet doesn’t have to be boring. We’re leaving the monotonous cycle of protein bars and plain chicken in the past in favor of exciting, varied meals that are both packed with protein and delicious. Our favorite addition to any recipe? Mushrooms. Don’t compromise on flavor – just add umami-rich mushrooms to any protein-focused recipe.

Protein: A Rising Star

As predicted in the Whole Foods 2025 Food Trends Report, consumer interest in protein is on the rise — and we’re all for it. From plant-based proteins to more traditional sources like animal meats, people are prioritizing protein with a wide range of foods. Contrary to what you might think, this trend is not just for dinner time. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and even dessert are all receiving the protein-packed treatment with additions of cottage cheese, eggs and lentils into recipes. The popularity of foods like protein pasta shows an emphasis on upgrading everyday eats is top of consumers’ minds. High-protein foods like beans and yogurt have been topping weekly shopping lists.

Taste the Trend

Any of these mushroom dishes are sure to satisfy your protein fix, while still hitting the yum-factor in a major way.

Beef and Broccoli with Mushrooms: Half mushrooms, half beef = 100% delicious! Introducing a popular Asian fusion dish, this time with a portabella twist. For those who prefer plant-based protein, try substituting firm, cubed tofu for skirt steak. Serve over rice and top with sesame seeds to complete!

Creamy Chicken Marsala: Without mushrooms, we wouldn't have this classic, comforting dish. The rich, savory mushrooms make chicken stand out in every way — the combination in this recipe has us drooling.

Steak with Herb Sautéed Mushrooms: Can you say yum? Everyone knows a delicious, juicy steak isn’t complete without sautéed mushrooms. We recommend these herby crimini or white button mushrooms for the perfect staple dish.
